Interview with Barbara Käser, Managing Director of Optik Atelier Käser
Trends come and go. What is the current trend in the optician industry?
„Small, but finely made“: This is a countertrend to fashion and mass. We carry glasses from smaller manufacturers with high quality standards. On our travels to trade fairs all over Europe we look for manufacturers with a tradition of craftsmanship. That’s how we found a manufactory that copied a customer’s broken and no longer available favourite glasses – favourite glasses remain favourite glasses.
There are many different types of glasses. What standards do the glasses that come into your assortment have to fulfill?
Good design and great materials simply give pleasure for longer – for our customers as well as for us! That’s why we remain true to timeless shapes and look for labels that break new grounds in materials. For example, we have frames with root wood on natural horn or stone on titanium!
To look good is one thing. With glasses, however, the view should also be right. That’s why we take a lot of time to determine the visual needs of our customers. And to fulfill them.
You offer exclusively „independent labels“. What is meant by that?
We are free and independent, just like our manufactories. We usually know our designers and manufacturers personally. The only thing that counts is quality and a long-term relationship. Masunaga from Japan is an example of outstanding titanium frames that have been manufactured in the family’s own factory since 1905.
Unlike many eyewear retailers you are also a studio. How does this differ from a conventional eyewear retailer?
Good form needs good craftsmanship: most of our glasses are handmade, our lenses are state of the art. They are developed and manufactured in Switzerland using the latest technology. Each glass is matched to the respective frame and inserted by us. It is often worthwhile to bring a good pair of glasses to the optik atelier käser for repair. Horn eyeglasses can therefore still cut a good figure even after twenty years.
What goals do you aim to achieve with optik atelier käser in the future?
Optician Barbara Käser and the apprentice, her husband Juri Weiss, together form Optik Atelier Käser and are already established after 4 years. Many customers have become friends.
In the future there will certainly be one or two surprises that we can toast to… a beer and a prosecco will therefore always be ready in the fridge.
