Interview with Alice Cel-Oller, Managing Director of Sirup Basel
How and when did Sirup come into being?
Sirup has been in existence since 2011. The previous owner wanted to give up the business completely. Since I saw the great potential of the children’s shop Sirup, I took over the shop in 2016. Before that, I had already considered the idea of running a small shop myself. Hence, the decision was easy. In addition, sewing is one of my hobbies. I am a mummy myself, so I have a good feeling for what children like to wear.
There are many shops in Basel that sell children’s clothing. What makes your shop unique?
Sirup is a combination of heart, soul and enthusiasm. All the clothes are handmade by our 23 designers with passion and their many years of experience. This makes Sirup unique.
Furthermore, we only use high-quality and sustainable materials from Europe. This has the positive effect that the garments can be worn for at least two years at a time. Thus, a positive, sustainable focus is placed on the environment.
What is important to you to be successful with your shop?
The topic „handmade“ is particularly close to my heart, as is the fact that my shop is a specialist shop for children’s fashion and accessories. My clothes are colourful, comfortable and a bit cheeky. All those who support me, from design to production, are mummies themselves, as well as experts in this field.
What are Sirup’s plans for the future?
I work as a designer myself. My goal is to produce my own Sirup collection and sell it in my store. In addition, I will sell my own Sirup collection in my online shop, which is currently being expanded.
