Interview with Marianne Mumenthaler, Managing Director of Marinsel
What is your favorite item?
I always have my Etnia Barcelona sunglasses with me. They are light, transparent and not quite as noticeable. A bit like me.
Marianne, what is your recipe for success?
To be successful, it is important to find a niche, as well as listening to the customers. In 2006, I found my niche with Marinsel. Fair fashion and yet stylish. We try to find great labels that are as sustainable as possible and offer their creations in our concept store. We are constantly changing and adapting to our customers‘ wishes; however, we never lose sight of our vision.
What differentiates your store from others in your industry?
Everyone on my team can identify with our product range. Since we carry and use a lot of our assortment ourselves we can competently answer questions and pass on care tips or experience reports.
What is the best seller in your shop at the moment?
Fanny Packs. The practical belt bag has become fashionable again and not only in the younger generation.
We offer our customers a large assortment. We provide a total of five different labels which manufacture belt bags. The street wear style of the fanny pack is now available from sporty to chic.
Are there any items in your product range that are particularly popular as gifts?
Customers particularly like to gift cookbooks. I think that’s because of the social aspect. Cooking together, eating together and, in the meantime, forgetting time thanks to good conversations. Of course, cookbooks are only a small part of our offer. Customers who buy backpacks, clothes or sunglasses in our shop usually gift it themselves (laughs). I think it is not quite usual to gift clothes. Those who find a favourite item in our shop want to keep it.
What are your wishes for your company?
I wish to continue to have a great clientele that will accompany me faithfully. Furthermore, I wish that our assortment remains exciting. Fair fashion is important to us, and there are more and more labels which offer that. In the future, we would like to focus even more on the fair aspect and are very confident in doing so.
What are you often asked by your customers?
Do you create your own products? We are a concept store, which means that we offer high-quality products from different labels in our product range. Our producers come from all over the world. For example, we offer stylish and water-repellent backpacks from Japan or soaps from Switzerland. When selecting our products, we make sure that they represent our style, while being as sustainable as possible.

Tips from the expert
People are becoming more and more environmentally conscious, but there is still potential to make more effort not to produce waste unnecessarily. Does your shirt have a hole? Try to sew it. Are your shoes worn-out? Have a shoemaker re-sole them. Is your leather bag getting cracked? Learn to care for it, for example with leather balm. If you learn to repair your favourite items, it will not only make you happy but also help the environment.
