Interview with Marianne Mumenthaler, Managing Director of Ooid Store
What should never be missing in your suitcase?
My suitcase itself (laughs). I always take my QWSTION Weekender with me, whether it’s for two days or three weeks. This practical piece has numerous compartments, such as the laptop compartment. If you want to pack compactly, the Ooid Store is the address for you.
How long has your boutique Ooid Store been around?
In 2006, I opened my first small boutique named Marinsel at the Feldbergstrasse in Kleinbasel. In August 2014, I opened my second boutique, the Ooid Store. The reason for this was not only the lack of space but also the appeal of implementing a fresh concept. At the second location, there is not only more space but also other brands, a greater variety of clothing and, in addition, men’s fashion. This would be inconceivable in the narrow Marinsel.
Which service is only available at your shop?
When it’s a little quieter during the week, we take a particularly long time for our customers. For example, we are happy to help with style advice. Is there a special event coming up and appropriate clothes are still missing? Have you found an extravagant favourite piece, but there doesn’t seem to be any clothes you can combine with it? We take our time and show you how to dress for which occasion and how to match eye-catching clothes with basics.
Which of your products are best received by your customers?
We offer a wide range of bags, from athletic to chic, from small to large. My customers appreciate that. We sell shoes as well as bags. We have found our niche with classic yet modern shoes. This winter, we sold almost every lined shoe.
Are there any items in your product range that are particularly popular as gifts?
Our scented candles. The aromatic candles, made in France, are soy-based and poured into an elegant metal container. As a room scent, we do not only offer candles but also so-called potpourri. These are stones soaked in essential oil which diffuse a wonderful aroma.
Where’s the Ooid store supposed to be in five years?
At four years old, the Ooid Concept Store is still relatively new. Our assortment is constantly changing. New, aspiring brands are added, and others are dropped. In five years, I hope that our assortment and thus, the identity of the Ooid Store will be even stronger. And, of course, the most important thing is a growing clientele, which we will be able to support and advise over the coming years.
What are you often asked by your customers?
Which shop ran a business prior to the Ooid Store in this location? Before Ooid, two shops were located here in two separate rooms: an office and an antique shop with a cute business dog. When we moved in here, we removed the partition wall and were able to create much more space. The Ooid Store is just a few minutes away from Marinsel and the perfect extension to our storage space.

Tips from the expert
Everyone is familiar with the problem: a wardrobe full of clothes and yet nothing to put on. Invest in high quality basics. With enough basics in your wardrobe, you can dare to wear extravagant clothes and combine them. Have the courage to experiment with colours, shapes and materials.
